American road cyclist Kristin Armstrong was out in front from the start of the New Mexico based Tour of Gila. Winning four out of the five total stages of the tour, including the first three, Armstrong blew away the competition, taking the overall title by more than six minutes.

Armstrong built herself a commanding 5-minute lead over the first three stage wins. The race was hers to lose from there, which she wasn’t about to do. With the help of her team, Exergy TWENTY12, Armstrong took advantage of her time trial skills, completing the hat trick and setting up for a some what relaxing last two days of racing. Capping off an exciting week, the 2008 Olympic Time Trials Gold Medalist claimed the final stage, dubbed “The Gila Monster Road Race.” This is a 71.8-mile (115.6km), point-to-point road race with 5,610 feet (1,710 meters) of climbing and 4,714 feet (1,437 meters) of descent. No one could touch Armstrong as she road to the overall tour victory.

Recently returning from retirement and the birth of her son, Lucas, Armstrong has eyes on a spot on the US Olympic Team for the 2012 London Games. She has posted victories now this season in both the United States and Europe and looks to be in proper shape to perform on the world’s biggest stage. Armstrong’s next stop will be in her hometown of Boise, Idaho for the UCI Exergy Tour.

On the men’s side, Oakley phenoms and team Livestrong-Bontrager members Lawson Craddock and Ian Boswell finished first and second in the final stage, securing the top overall team ranking in the Tour of Gila.

Congratulations to Kristin and team Exergy TWENTY12 on their stellar performance in New Mexico and good luck in Boise!
