The world’s single largest annual sporting event commenced on Sunday, as the 94th Tour de France commenced in London. 189 riders, 54 of them wearing Oakley eyewear, stormed the streets of London and put on a spectacular show for more than one million electric fans.

Oakley’s Robbie McEwen (Predictor-Lotto) came out of nowhere to take stage one. Robbie was held up in a crash with 23k to go, but in the final meters, found his way back into the sprinters’ group to win his 12th TDF stage, earning himself the green sprinters jersey.

Oakley’s Robbie McEwen (Predictor-Lotto) who has won the Tour’s best sprinter title in three of the past five years, took Stage 1, despite crashing almost 15 miles from the finish of the 126-mile stage from London to Canterbury. McEwen managed to remount his bike and burs through the front riders in the last tenth of a mile to win the stage.

Fabian Cancellara (CSC) who won Saturday’s prologue, retained the yellow jersey and his status of overall leader. Andreas Klöden remained in second, 13 seconds back, and David Millar (Oakley), the British rider for Saunier Duval-Prodir, moved up to third place and earned the Tour’s first Polka Dot jersey of best climber. The white jersey for best young rider went to Oakley’s Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel).

Next up, the Tour will follow a table-top flat route of 105 miles from Dunkirk, France, to Ghent, Belgium.
