Tickled Pink: Oakley Canada Hosts Cyclist Ryder Hesjedal for a Surprise Watch Presentation

With a grin that stretched from ear to ear, Ryder smiled. It’s not often you can read the emotions of the Victoria, BC native, but today he wore his happiness on his sleeve…or his wrist to be exact.

After spending the weekend competing in the Grand Prix Quebec and Montreal races, the team Garmin-Sharp cyclist stopped by the Oakley Canada office to celebrate his accomplishments in 2012 with the staff.

Ryder made history this spring when he won the Giro d’Italia to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Tour. He clinched the victory on the last stage, a time trial during which he turned a 31-second deficit into a 16-second lead. Many times during the stage race Ryder was challenged for the Magila Rosa, but he took each challenge head on and dug deep on the last stage to become the 2012 Giro d’Italia champion.

“As an athlete, I have always envisioned myself being in the position to do something really great one day,” said Ryder. “When I found myself in that position many times in this year’s Giro I realized I knew exactly what to do.”

Before a crash forced him out of this year’s Tour de France, Ryder was a top contender for the coveted yellow jersey. He also had the honor of representing Canada in London this summer. To commemorate and applaud Ryder for all of his success and hard work, Oakley presented Ryder with a Full Metal Jacket watch. The limited edition watch, which is part of the Oakley Elite collection, stood out on his slim wrists as he proudly showed it off to his wife. Ryder would later tweet “It’s a beauty #epictimepiece” and show it off to his followers.

Upon his departure from Oakley Canada, the smile was still there as he checked the time on his newly acquired timepiece, “Its always fun to meet the team behind the products I am so happy to wear.”

We’re proud of you Ryder! We’ll be happy to cheer you on, anytime…
