Oakley Cricketers Score Big At Cricket South Africa’s Gala Awards Banquet
There was no bigger story in Test cricket this year in South Africa than Vernon Philander. Philander far exceeded expectations in his debut year, which made it only fitting that he was named both South African Cricketer of the Year and Sunfoil Cricketer of the Year. Awards were given to some of the world’s best athletes at Cricket South Africa’s Gala Awards Banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Oakley athletes were honored with most of the major awards at the gala.
Philander wasted no time this year becoming one of South Africa’s most popular cricketers. Not only did he claim the top honor at the CSA’s, he was also named the CSA Fans’ Cricketer of Year. The 26-year-old had a stellar season, taking 51 wickets in seven Tests at an average of 14.15. He took five or more wickets in an innings on six occasions and twice claimed 10 wickets in a match. The Cape Cobras bowler was mainly responsible for bowling out Australia for 47 in his debut test in Cape Town last November, taking five for 15. This was quite the impressive breakthrough into Test cricket during the 2011-12 season, proving the accolades were well deserved.
“Nowhere is this excellence better recorded than in the brilliance of Vernon Philander who won CSA’s supreme award,” said CSA Action CEO Jaques Faul. “He took 51 wickets in his first seven Test matches – the second quickest performance of all time and the first time this has been achieved in nearly 120 years on pitches that were far more conducive to good batting performances than was the case 100 years ago.”
Philander wasn’t the only Oakley athlete on display at the CSA’s. Hard-hitting opening batsman Richard Levi collected the Twenty20 player of the year award for his innings of 117 not out off 51 balls against New Zealand in Hamilton. He set world records by scoring 100 runs off 45 balls and hitting 13 sixes. AB de Villiers was also named One-day International Cricketer of the Year after scoring 475 runs at an average of 158.33 with a strike rate of 116.13 in his first season as South Africa’s limited-overs captain.
Congratulations to all the cricketers honored at this year’s Cricket South Africa’s Gala Awards Banquet. Oakley is proud of its international cricketers and wish them continued success in the upcoming seasons.
