Rally! LPGA Star Yani Tseng Emerges Victorious After LPGA Thailand Thriller
She’s the top ranked women’s golfer in the world. And she’s thriving in the spotlight.
Oakley’s LPGA star, Yani Tseng, displayed her nerves of steel after a thrilling final hole on Sunday at the LPGA Thailand – fending off a possible playoff after fellow Oakley star Ai Miyazato made a final charge with a close approach. Her eventual one-stroke victory following a killer 100-yard shot, and a tap-in putt for birdie, dazzled the Thai crowd.
“It was an incredible shot. I think it’s the shot of the week,” Yani said, rocking her Oakley performance eyewear. "Especially, I saw that Ai hit it so close and I knew she was going to make that putt. So, I tell myself, ‘I need to get this close.’ "
And she did, big time.
The Taiwanese prodigy defended her title at the event for her 13th LPGA tour victory with a 6-under 66 to finish at 19-under 269, despite the pressure of being the ‘favorite.’
“After last year, I have world No. 1 and I had 12 wins and that pressure keep going on and on,” she continued. “I kind of drive my team crazy. They were thinking I feel so much pressure. So, sometimes I wasn’t happy and I wasn’t quite nice to them. They keep telling me, ‘Think you have some pressure, you need to relax yourself.’ We kind of have a team meeting to keep me relaxed and not feeling like I had pressure. So I think my team did a great job and helped a lot through this week. It was just great. I feel really good about that.”
Ai, however, was always in the game. Charging into the final round with the lead over Yani, she eventually finished with a solid 67.
“Of course, Yani is No. 1, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy today,” Ai said, sporting her own Oakley Performance Eyewear. “I kind of expected her to play that way.”
Congratulations to Yani – and to Ai for the one-two O finish!
