Hot Streak: Karrie Webb Tallies Second Straight LPGA Win at Founders Cup in Phoenix

Karrie Webb’s drought ended…in the desert of all places.

Oakley’s Aussie Golfer nabbed her second straight LPGA Tour victory on March 20 at the LPGA Founders Cup in Phoenix after a long two years without a win. All on the heels of a resounding victory at the HSBC Women’s Champions in the tour’s second event of the year.

With a final round of 6-under 66, Karrie powered to the top of the leaderboard and fought off fierce challenges from Americans Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer to emerge triumphant by a mere shot.

Both Webb and Creamer shot their way to a 66, but Karrie had just enough of an edge through 36 holes to snatch the contest.

Her 38th overall win on the Tour, this one was even more special. The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and charities to help victims of the Japan earthquake split a $200,000 donation in Webb’s honor.

“I didn’t think I’d be sitting here winning, so at the start of the day I was playing to make as much money as I could for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Foundation, and I talked earlier in the week on behalf of – the reason why I’m involved with them is because of my coach Kelvin Haller, who’s been a quadriplegic for 20 years now,” Karrie said – rocking her Oakley Enduring eyewear.

“So you know, that’s why I’ve been involved with them, and it’s near and dear to my heart to be associated with them. And I think they’ll understand that I am splitting the 200,000 between them and the relief efforts in Japan. You know, I’ve been glued to the TV watching it for the past, what, 10 days, nine days now, and you know, it’s just unbelievable what’s going on over there. And Japan, the fans, the people and many businesses over there have supported me throughout my entire career. So you know, I feel like it’s just the least I could do.”

As far as regaining her competitive groove, she’s definitely stoked on it – but cautiously optimistic.

“Yeah, well, back to back it’s been I don’t know how many years. But yeah, it feels great. You know, at the start of the day, like I said, I didn’t think I’d be sitting here. I knew I had an outside shot. But you know, I wouldn’t have picked it at the start of the year that I would have won two out of the first three, so feel great about it, and hopefully it’ll continue for the rest of the year.”

Congrats Karrie!
