Samantha Stosur has had a long and successful career in the sport of professional tennis. Anyone who knows the story of Stosur will easily point out that the 2011 US Open was without a doubt her most successful and career defining moment. Stosur ousted the best player in the world, Serena Williams in the final at Flushing Meadow to shock the world and collect her first, and only Grand Slam tournament title.
It’s been an admittedly tough stretch for Australia’s shining tennis star, Sam Stosur since she stunned the world in 2011, topping Serena Williams in the final of the US Open. Since her win in New York, Stosur had failed to secure another singles title, until Sunday. The 29-year-old entered the Southern California Open in Carlsbad as a wild card and fought her way to the event title, beating Victoria Azarenka 6-2 6-3 in Sunday’s final.
22-year-old Caroline Buchanan entered Sunday’s BMX World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand as a perennial favorite to win the event. This wasn’t the first time however the youngster had gone into a major BMX event as the favorite to win gold. Just over a year ago, Buchanan flew to London with one thing on her mind: Olympic gold. While her goals at the 2012 Olympic Games didn’t exactly play out, Buchanan entered the 2013 Worlds with her eyes on redemption. She got just that when she crossed the line ahead of countrywoman Lauren Reynolds with a 1.296 second lead to earn herself the rainbow stripes, distinguishing her as a world champion.
