It’s been quite the year for both Sweden’s Lisa Norden and Spain’s Javier Gomez Noya. That year was going to come to an end one way or the other in Auckland, NZ this past weekend. Leave it up to the two London Olympic silver medalists to cap off two already outstanding seasons with impressive performances at the ITU Grand Final. Gomez Noya won the final race in the ITU World Triathlon Series on Sunday, beating out runner-up Jonathan Brownlee in a dramatic run through downtown Auckland. Gomez Noya’s winning effort landed him in second place the overall season standings. While Norden wound up finishing fourth on the day in New Zealand, it was all she needed to claim her first elite world championship title.
Unfinished Business: A Look Into The Mind of Olympic Silver Medalist Lisa Norden From the Oakley Safehouse in Kona
2012 Olympic silver medalist, Lisa Norden spent over a week with us during the IRONMAN World Championships, living in the Kona Oakley Safehouse along side Oakley staff members. At first glance, Norden can be perceived as a bit shy; quiet perhaps. But over time, you begin to get the sense that Norden is not so much shy, as she is just a down right polite, well mannered girl from Sweden, trying not over-impose in any way (she didn’t). After a bit of coaxing, Norden opened up and fit right in, just like she was a part of the Oakley family, which she is.
Leanda Cave of Great Britain was already a World Champion going into Saturday’s race in Kona. Cave won the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Las Vegas just a short month prior. Cave proved why she is a true champion Saturday taking down a stacked women’s field on the hot, windy highways of Kailua Kona, Hawaii. The Brit overtook Switzerland’s Caroline Steffen with two miles remaining in the run to obtain the coveted crown at the end of Ali’i Drive. 2010 champion, Mirinda Carfrae ran her heart out, collapsing at the finish line, placing third. All three women completed this year’s epic IRONMAN World Championships wearing the special, custom pink and white Oakley Radarlock, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Young Survival Coalition.
