Crashing Into a Title: Casey Currie Snags 2010 TORC Pro Light Championship
Oakley’s Casey Currie threw down big at the “Big House” this past week. The result: The 2010 TORC Pro Light Championship plaque in his grip.
A massive crowd of 15,000+ at Crandon International Raceway witnessed the O Team Driver sweep the weekend after super intense, heart stopping off-road action.
Casey plowed into the weekend with a narrow five point margin over Andrew Caddell for the class championship. The two have been clawing to gain an edge on one another – but the two rivals took it to another level at the Big House on Saturday. The Pro Lights started from the familiar “land rush” start that has all the drivers lined up side-by-side in a motocross-style sprint for the turn one holeshot. Casey’s Ford with BFGoodrich tires won the holeshot cleanly and went on to lead every lap on the winding 1.5 mile track until the final lap.
With the checkered flag coming up on the last lap, Caddell rammed his bumper into Casey’s rear tire – sending him rolling. But the O charger recovered and crossed the finish line behind first-place finisher Ross Hoek.
Oh, but that wasn’t the end of it. After review, USAC officials deemed Caddell’s actions excessively aggressive – and Casey was awarded the victory.
“(Caddell and I) had some great side-by-side battles and in the last turn, I went to the inside because I thought he was going to try to bonsai me on the inside, I had been running on the outside of every turn,” Currie said. "He wants to win as bad as I do. It’s all good between us, but you know, it’s racing.”
Intense racing indeed. It only got crazier during the finals on Sunday.
Caddell, challenging for the front of the pack, was rocked and ejected by an aggressive Marty Hart. Casey capitalized and mashed his way to a glorious win.
“It was great to come to Crandon to finish the year," he said, rocking his Oakley racing suit. “The crowd’s incredible, everyone’s incredible! We had a flawless weekend. We won the championship! My first ever! I would like to thank all of my great sponsors—especially Monster (Energy) for taking me on this year; these great BFGoodrich tires; King shocks; Magnaflow; Motive gear, Oakley; MasterCraft and all my other sponsors and of course my entire crew and family that have worked so hard to improve the truck every race.”
