'Brake Through': NHRA Star Tony Schumacher Smashes Winless Streak in Bristol, Honors U.S. Army Birthday

There was no better time for Tony Schumacher to detonate his winless streak.

Oakley’s NHRA racing star – on the 237th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s birth – claimed a resounding victory at the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, effectively honoring one of his major sponsors with a triumph over Doug Kalitta in the Final.

The result, coming as a result to a superior reaction to the green light at .023 of a second (compared to Kalitta’s .065), also served as a present of sorts for his family on Father’s Day.

“What a day this has been,” a pumped Tony said, rocking his Oakley eyewear, racing fire suit, boots, gloves and base layer. “To be able to win for our Army Strong Soldiers and my dad, while ending a 32-race losing streak, it’s really a tremendous feeling. I can’t explain how happy I am right now. I almost forgot how heavy these event trophies are – I think I was beginning to lose my trophy muscles.”

Finally tallying his 68th overall win, Tony clipped Dom Lagana, Schumacher Racing teammate Spencer Massey, Clay Millican then finally Kalitta to hoist the winner’s trophy at Bristol Dragway.

“There aren’t any freebies in Top Fuel,” he continued – referring to the third time he’s grabbed the Top Fuel points lead on the season. “We definitely had to earn each and every round win today. We were pushed very hard by all of those guys, which was to be expected. I think NHRA drag racing fans are enjoying a great, competitive show so far this year.”
