Kick Start: Ryan Dungey Triumphs at Supercross-Toronto for First Win of the Season, Advances In Title Hunt

Ryan Dungey if officially back in the hunt.

It’s not as if the defending Supercross Champion was ever out of the battle for the top. But Oakley’s star just poised himself for a major charge, powering into a mere eight points from the Championship Standings lead after grabbing first win of the season in Toronto on Saturday.

But of course, it didn’t come easy.

Out of the gates, an unlikely leader emerged as Fabien Izoird mashed his way to the front…after squeaking into the 450 main via Last Chance Qualifier, that is.

But it wouldn’t last very long. Dungey smashed his way past Izoird to take the lead – and by lap two, had pulled away from Chad Reed and Trey Canard, who were the closest riders on point to challenge.

Meanwhile, the drama began to grab hold. Oakley’s superstar James “Bubba” Stewart went down in the first turn, dropping him to the back of the pack – only to collide with fellow O rider and previous Championship points leader Ryan Villopoto shortly after. (Bubba finished fourth, Villopoto ninth.)

The front three would never relinquish the lead and would mash through the checkered flags and flames and into an even crazier overall season landscape. With Bubba and RV off the podium – and Dungey grabbing a resounding first win, Chad Reed would take the series lead (236), followed by RV (233) and Dungey (228).

Which reminds us all: It ain’t over until the flames go off in Las Vegas for the Supercross Finals. Until then, this wild ride is set to just keep getting gnarlier.

Congratulations to Ryan for patiently charging his way back to a potential title defense!
