James "Bubba" Stewart

Oakley superstar James “Bubba” Stewart continued his impressive winning streak this past weekend. In front of over 45,000 fans at Angel Stadium, he mounted a come-from-behind win in the opening round of the 2006 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.

After poor starts in the main, Bubba – along with Oakley’s Ricky Carmichael, the all-time race winner of the sport – sliced their way through the pack and moved past Yamaha’s Chad Reed at the half-way point. RC moved into the lead first, but a mishap in the technical whoop section had the Oakley rider picking himself off the ground. After the misfortune of RC, Bubba moved passed Chad Reed and, little by little, distanced himself from the rest of the field. Reigning Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP and AMA Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael finished third after mounting a late charge while Reed rode steady to finish second.

Oakley rider Ernesto Fonseca, who had control of the race by the end of the first lap was looking good until the track reached up and yanked him off his bike on lap 2. Michael Byrne looked great all day in practice, but when the sun fell upon the night program, unfortunately, so did the Aussie. Byrne crashed hard in the heat race and suffered a bruised heel, but was able to tough it out and race the main event to finish in ninth while Ernesto got up and claimed sixth.
