Team Oakley Sweep in Seattle; Villopoto Claims Fifth Win of the Season
Ryan Villopoto won his second straight victory and fifth of the AMA Supercross season in front of his hometown fans in Seattle, Washington on Saturday night. He was joined on the podium by fellow team Oakley riders James Stewart and Ryan Dungey respectively.
After another poor start in his heat race, which sent him to the semi for the second consecutive week, Villopoto secured the holeshot in the main event and subsequently led all 20 laps in front of nearly 54k fans at CenturyLink Field – the site of his very first 450SX win back in 2009.
“I don’t think I’ve ever raced in front of a crowd cheering me on this loud,” said Villopoto. “It’s tough to race at home and in the past I haven’t been that stellar here, so to have a race like that is awesome.”
The three-time defending series champion was unable to lock up the series championship this weekend, but the victory extends his points lead to 48 over Stewart in second.
“I’m not thinking about the championship right now,” said Villopoto. “But it does feel good to have an opportunity to wrap up the title in New York in a couple weeks.”
Rounding out the top three in the standings and the Seattle podium was Ryan Dungey who is 51 points behind the leader heading into the next race on April 26.
In the 250SX Western Regional race fellow team Oakley rider Cole Seely closed the gap on the early race leader Dean Wilson for his second victory of the series. Wilson was hot on Seely’s heels until he lost traction and went down on Lap 4, dropping to fifth and allowing Jason Anderson and Justin Hill to swoop in for second and third respectively.
Heading into the Las Vegas finale Seely is trailing Anderson in the standings by just eight points.
“I’m just trying to stay alive in the points hunt,” said Seely, also the 2011 Seattle winner. “We were able to put together 15 solid laps. This is where I need to be, so I’m pumped. I’m not thinking about the points. Whatever happens, happens. It’s been a fun year.”
Congrats to all the team Oakley athletes who raced this weekend!
