Back on Track: Ryan Villopoto Claims Second Supercross Victory at Oakland

For Ryan Villopoto, the key was to move forward after Anaheim II as fast as possible.

The three-time defending King of Supercross threw himself back on target in his mission to defend his Championship with a commanding victory in Oakland this past weekend.

Despite a late, ferocious charge from fellow Oakley star James “Bubba” Stewart, RV exerted his dominance and closed out the race to grab back the points lead in the Championship standings.

“It feels good to be up here tonight,” he said following the win. “We have put in a lot of work at the test track, and I have a great team behind me and a great bike under me. I hope I can carry this momentum into Anaheim next weekend.”

It was Vince Friese who’d grab the holeshot out of the gates – but it didn’t take long for RV to claw his way to the front of the pack.

Bubba’s uphill climb was even more dramatic – starting his own push on Lap 4 to move up to fourth. He’d later set his sights on a recently hot Chad Reed, ultimately passing him to finish a mere 4.2 seconds behind RV.

“The track was really one-lined tonight,” said Stewart. “I had to take some chances out there to move through the field.”
