Unbeatable: Ryan Villopoto Dominates End of AMA Motocross Season For Second Title, Eighth Overall AMA Crown
Ryan Villopoto dominating Motocross races: It’s becoming all too much like clockwork.
The three-time defending Supercross Champion stuck another feather in his Championship cap after sweeping both Motos at the Utah National on Aug. 17 – claiming his second Outdoors crown and even more accolades before the season even ended.
High-fiving hordes of admiring fans after his season triumph was secured, the legend-in-the-making celebrated his eighth overall AMA Championship – tying him for second all-time with Jeremy McGrath. The feat places him 15 titles behind fellow Oakley MX superstar, Ricky Carmichael.
“I don’t think you ever sit down and think, ‘OK, well, this is what Jeremy has, this is what Ricky has’ and so on,” RV said, reflecting on the day. “You just take it year by year and race by race. I never started this sport to look at [McGrath] or Ricky or anybody else and say I’m going to beat their records.”
But it can no longer be denied that O’s ripper can comfortably be mentioned alongside the sport’s all-time greats.
Quite obviously the best current rider worldwide, his undeniable work ethic, team structure, fitness and overall program is paying off in results that are, in some ways, making his domination of races almost monotonous.
Nonetheless, for a rider of Ryan’s caliber, it never gets easier.
“I think it is gnarly being at this level, I think that’s one of the reasons why Ricky retired when he did, and why I think our careers are shorter when you’re at the top for so long,” he explained. “The thing that keeps the top guys going is winning — that is the fun part. But during the week is tough.”
A massive congratulations to RV for incredible results this Outdoors season!
