Not Just Another Race, This One's For Karla

In racing, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. However, we sometimes think that our beloved racing is as serious as life. It is not – as a very close family in our racing community made us realize this week.

15-year-old Karla Asch lost her fight against her illness on February 5, 2006. Karla is the daughter of Rick Asch, who has been in the industry working for Kawasaki motor corporation for nearly two decades. As sad as we all are, this is nothing compared to what her family is going through right now.

We can only lessen their load with prayers, support, and help – letting them know that we feel for their family. Pretty much everyone at the race this weekend was wearing buttons and stickers with Karla’s name. Friday at the funeral, it was like the pits at a supercross with the best in the industry showing up to show there support.

But one person made that name really stand out it was Oakley’s James Stewart who had: ‘FOR KARLA’ written in big letters on his gear.

Bubba, whose impatience can sometimes put him in a position to lose a race, did not want to loose this one. He fought hard – and with patience – knowing that not only his team and fans where counting on him, but also one sweet, beautiful girl somewhere up there was counting on him. At the end of the race, it was Bubba who took the black-and-white and showed that it was a race indeed “FOR KARLA”. Oakley’s Ricky Carmichael also showed his support with a butt patch logo reading “GBRA” – GOD BLESS RICK ACSH. RC pulled the holeshot and led for 18 laps until Bubba made the pass with two laps left and brought home the win.
