Catharine Pendrel Wraps Up UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Title
There was a battle high in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. The prize for the victor; a RockyRoads UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Championship. With her victory at the sixth stop on the cross-country World Cup series, Oakley’s Catharine Pendrel also secured the overall 2012 World Cup title. She highlighted a day that saw her LUNA Pro team take the top three spots in the race. Teammates Katerina Nash and Georgia Gould finished second and third respectively.
Conditions were not ideal on the steep course. The day provided extremely hot temperatures and a dry, dusty course, which meant it was no leisure ride for the ladies. Beginning the final lap, Gould held the lead by over 50 seconds. However, her two teammates eventually caught her in a heartbreaking turn of events. Gould suffered a flat tire during the final rocky climb. In a last ditch effort to pull out the victory, Gould used a C02 inflation cartridge, but it wasn’t enough, as her tire went flat again only 100 meters from the finish. As she hopped off her bike to begin a dash on foot for the finish, Pendrel and Nash shot past her to take the top two prizes.
Pendrel expressed emotions you would expect from any competitor. No professional mountain bike rider is going to turn down a win, however she felt bad for her Luna teammate that it had to come in that fashion.
“I was really sad,” she said. “I did not want it to come down to that. It was not the situation I wanted. Yes, I wanted Luna 1-2-3, but I wanted the best legs to win on the day and that was Georgia.”
Although Pendrel was upset she couldn’t help her teammate win her first World Cup race, she can rest easy knowing that with her victory in Windham, she has given herself a lead in the season standings that is unbeatable. With only one race to go in Val d’Isere, France at the end of the month, Pendrel cannot be overtaken for the overall title.
Her overall World Cup title shows her true talent and determination as a rider, while her heartbreak and compassion for her teammate show her true character as a person. Congratulations to Catharine and the Luna team on a great season.
