Crankworx 2006

The 3rd edition of Crankworx presented by Kokanne beer has come to an end and the result has again raised the bar in MTB. The sky is no longer the limit, imagination and creativity have arrived!

With the beautiful yet challenging Whistler Mountain as a canvas, the organizers put together a festival of gravity that will go down as the event of the year. It was another crazy week in Whistler. Everyone was at the base of Whistler Mountain for the 2006 Crankworx rendezvous. The week started out with the Big Air down hill on the mountains infamous "A-Line" trail and at the finish we had a full podium loaded with Oakley factory pilots. Brian Lopes took the win, while Cedric Gracia and Bryn Atkinson took 2nd and 3rd respectively, only seconds apart.

The next event was the BikerCross, which snaked its way thru the Boneyard to the base of whistler village. In the women’s event Jill Kintner charged the gate and never looked back, taking the win. The men’s event saw Brian Lopes and Cedric Gracia once again as the favorites, but Jared Graves was the first to the turn and held it to the finish while CG and BL came in 2nd and 4th for the day.

The main event of the week was the Slopestyle, which was held in the boneyard at the base of the mountain. The features in the boneyard were bigger then ever and the crowd of well over 10,000 spectators was on hand to fuel up the crazy stuntmen! Oakley was well represented with factory pilots Cameron Zink, Kyle Strait, Thomas Vanderham and Wade Simmons. After the rounds of qualifying, the finals had everyone out for the win. Rumors were that Zink was going to spin off the Kokanne drop, which he did, flawlessly, leaving the rest at the top of the hill guessing what he pulled off. Zink’s first run was perfect and included a X-up, back flip, nac nac capped off with a big clean 360 spin down and across the 25 foot drop. Kyle Strait was the last rider with a chance to knock Cam off and he came close by tailwhipping the Kokanne drop and stomping it perfectly. However, it was only enough to put him in third place giving Zink the win!

It was a great day for mountain biking and a great day for Oakley taking 1st and third in the biggest mountain bike event of the year.
