Legend In the Making: Ryan Villopoto Claims Third Straight Supercross Title, Charges Into History Books

If it wasn’t already apparent before, there’s no longer any doubt. Ryan Villopoto is on track to legend status.

Oakley’s defending back-to-back Supercross Champion charged his way into motocross lore, claiming his third straight title following a dramatic victory in Salt Lake City Saturday. The immense result catapulted RV into an elite class of MX icons – joining the likes of Bob Hannah, Jeremy McGrath and O Legend Ricky Carmichael as one of the only riders to take three straight.

“It’s unreal,” said Ryan after bagging his 33rd career triumph and ninth on the season to take the hardware before going into the Finale in Las Vegas. “It was a crazy race and the track was really technical. Any little mistake would make it anyone’s game. We [Monster Energy Kawasaki] started the season off really rough and had a lot of stepping stones to overcome, but we did it as a team and we did it well.”

But, as always, glory didn’t come with a walk in the park.

Dazzling a massive crowd of 43,149 souls, RV clawed his way to the lead, despite a solid Holeshot by fellow Oakley ripper Ryan Dungey.

It was almost routine from there – with a massive two-plus second lead built by RV within the first few laps.

Despite some serious charges from RD and Davi Millsaps, there simply was no catching the scorching Monster Energy Kawasaki star on his way to destiny.

“It’s unreal,” he continued. "It is unbelievable…We had a lot of stepping stones to crawl up. It is amazing. To win a championship, it’s amazing and to win three in a row…man it’s unbelievable.”

With that, RV is the latest rider to take three total Championships in his career – with Carmichael, McGrath, Hannah and Jeff Stanton being the only others to have accomplished the ultra impressive feat.

A huge congrats goes out to Ryan and his Monster Energy Kawasaki Team from the Oakley family for an unreal season and continued glory!
