Fernando Alonso felt the first 2011 Ferrari victory coming after a recent runner-up finish. And he didn’t have to wait long.

Oakley’s Spanish Formula 1 Superstar triumphed at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, powering past Sebastian Vettel to his 27th career win. The win also fell on the 60-year anniversary of the Italian company’s very first Grand Prix win.

“Today it is 60 years since Ferrari won its first Grand Prix in Formula One,” Alonso said in his Oakley eyewear. “And today we won on the same circuit.”

Even better, the victory shoots Alonso up to third in the drivers’ championship standings behind Vettel and Mark Webber.

“Here in England, motor racing is very big,” Fernando continued. “People here understand this sport. There are hundreds of different categories of racing here, like historic car racing, things that only happen in England because they love it so much. To win in front of these people is very special.”

And the day’s historical significance was definitely at the top of his mind.

“Every single championship for Ferrari began with that car and with Froilán,” he said, referring to José Froilán González – the Argentinian that claimed the team’s first title on the same track.

Fernando also had in mind “the sons and daughters of the guys who were there 50 years ago, and who are working with the same passion for racing".

All in all, one huge day for Ferrari and their resurgence in Formula 1!

A big congratulations to Fernando for the brilliant victory at Silverstone.
