Dungey and Villopoto established their top form in the qualifiers, grabbing their respective heat races, while Bubba overshot the first turn after grabbing the holeshot in Heat 2. But he masterfully charged from the middle of the pack to a fourth place finish to set the tone for what would be an amazing Main Event.
