Hangtown National: Defending Outdoor Motocross Champ Ryan Dungey Claims Moto 1 Victory, Overall Second

Ryan Dungey picked up right where he left off last season: With a victory.

Oakley’s defending AMA Pro Motocross Champion triumphed in Moto 1 at Hangtown National to open up the Outdoors season in top form – while O’s newly crowned Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto grabbed third.

The first Moto of the day was one killer way to kick off the season. When the gates dropped, it was Kevin Windham who bolted to the Holeshot. But it would be short lived – as Dungey powered his way to the front of the pack with a pesky Chad Reed fighting hard to pass him for the duration of the race.

But super consistent riding by Ryan pushed him further and further away from the pack – holding a lead of more than 7 seconds in front of Reed at times throughout the Moto.

He’d cruise on to a statement victory before a raucous Rancho Cordova (Sacramento) crowd – indicating his strong intention to defend his title this year.

Moto 2 was just as much of an intense battle in deteriorating track conditions – with the same two riders, Dungey and Reed, fighting with everything they had at the front of the pack.

Although Ryan held the lead at one point – a hard-charging Reed would control the leader’s spot for the second half of the Moto for the win, handing the second place overall finish to Dungey.

Nonetheless, the day’s performance was a solid display of top form racing for Oakley’s Dungey and Villopoto…both of whom are absolutely poised to challenge for the Outdoors title this year.
