BUBBA EXCLUSIVE: James Stewart Sounds Off On New Style and Victories

James “Bubba” Stewart has been raising eyebrows throughout the Motocross world lately.

Famous for his hard-charging style – often ‘going fast no matter what’ despite the risks – Oakley’s long-time star claimed back-to-back victories (San Diego and Dallas) in the early Supercross season with a more strategic, controlled ferocity.

With Bubba returning to championship contention following a ‘drought’ of sorts, he provided some exclusive insight into his new, matured look as he continues his campaign to recapture glory. Hear it from the man himself…

Oakley Motorsports:
You were on a two-race win streak: The public has been noticing that you’ve been racing a little differently from years past – leading you to your wins. Are you consciously transitioning into a ‘new Bubba’ on the track, or is it just a refinement of your strategy, race to race?

Bubba:
I think what people see is a result of the consistent work that’s being put in. The team and I have found a good rhythm to everything and the communication is good. Plus we’ve had a FULL offseason of positive testing and training. No issues with health or anything big with the bike. We’ve just been working. So that’s really the biggest difference that people are seeing as opposed to in the past. Maybe it is refinement but everything is working the right way and that’s the result of it.

Oakley Motorsports:
Do you see your overall ‘style’ changing or progressing as you move forward? Or are you always going to be ‘going fast’ no matter what?

Bubba:
My style is going to always be what it is. If I’m having fun, I’m going fast. So I don’t see it changing much. But I do see us becoming more efficient. The team, even me. And that has been the case all year. Anaheim 1 was a freak deal but we performed like we knew we could. And it’s been the same at each race.

Oakley Motorsports:
What are your thoughts on your current team? What’s set them apart from some of your past setups?

Bubba:
I really like the team. These guys stuck with me through some hard times and through all of that we found out who we all were. So after putting in some real work it all shows through. We may laugh and all that. But when it comes time to get busy, that’s what it is. A lot of respect and honesty around the work we do. And everybody wants to win so we’re all earning that together.

Oakley Motorsports:
The field of riders always changes – but right now, at this point in time, what are your thoughts on the consistent competitors and their styles? Are there any kids that you see that are on the brink of stepping up to be one of the elite soon?

Bubba:
The field is deep right now. There’s tons of riders who are gonna be big names. Really just gotta see how many bikes open up for these guys! Obviously Roczen is doing good, Barcia, Hahn, Tomac, Tickle, Pieck. They’re all getting there each weekend. I mean the 450 class has a ton of race winners in it now. And that’s saying a lot. The styles are different and that’s exciting too. But all these guys are just gonna get better and better.

Oakley Motorsports:
Finally, are you planning on bringing a little bit of Rick James and the likes back to the mix anytime soon?

Bubba:
Rick James Stewart, JeromeintheZone, Prince and all that, they aren’t too far away lol. That’s almost like everyday around here. But I guess on Saturdays those guys have been watching with the rest of us to see what’s gonna happen!
