Oakley sweeps the podium on night one of the prestigious event

Oakley’s Ricky Carmichael swept both motos at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas @ MGM Grand Garden Arena. RC ripped the holeshot for the second night in a row in the AMA Supercross class, followed by Kevin Windham and Oakley’s Ernesto Fonseca. Carmichael led all 25 laps of the main event for his third career U.S. Open championship.

This win wraps up a grand slam season for Oakley’s Carmichael, winning the following championships: World Supercross GP, AMA Supercross, AMA Motocross, Motocross des Nations and the U.S. Open. Windham finished second and fellow Oakley teammate Michael Byrne finished third. Fonseca crashed late in the race and was unable to finish the second night.

“It has been an unbelievable year for me,” RC said. “I am really excited for Suzuki, and all my sponsors this is a big night for them. They gave me an opportunity, and we all worked together on this great season. It was unfortunate that Chad (Reed) and James (Stewart) could not race tonight. I sacrificed a lot to have such a great season, and it was well worth it.”

Oakley’s rising star Eli Tomac, son of the legendary Mountain biker John Tomac, finished an impressive second overall in the 85cc invitational race. Eli was on fire setting some of the fastest lap times in the class, but a couple bad starts had Eli fighting through the pack and getting on the box to represent the Tomac name proudly.

The eighth-annual U.S. Open, which will be broadcast nationally on NBC October 23 at 4:30-6:00 p.m. EST for the second consecutive season, features the world’s top motocross racers competing for the world’s largest single race purse.
