Retaking the Lead: Bubba Stewart Mashes to Victory in Oakland Supercross, Moves to Top Spot in Standings
Bubba is hungry. Oakley’s Motocross Superstar officially retook the Supercross standings lead this past weekend after emerging victorious in Oakland for his second triumph of the season.
Supercross Stop 3 was two words: Absolutely epic. The first visit the sport has ever made to historic Dodger Stadium saw Oakley Stars Ryan Villopoto, James “Bubba” Stewart and Ryan Dungey engage in one of the most exciting battles in the sport’s history, eventually sweeping the podium and setting the pace for what’s sure to be an insane season. Dungey and Villopoto established their top form in the qualifiers, grabbing their respective heat races, while Bubba overshot the first turn after grabbing the holeshot in Heat 2. But he masterfully charged from the middle of the pack to a fourth place finish to set the tone for what would be an amazing Main Event.
He’s back. Officially. Oakley’s Motocross Superstar James “Bubba” Stewart dazzled a super packed Chase Field in Phoenix for the second race of the 2011 AMA Supercross Season, claiming a resounding victory after fending off a strong challenge from fellow O Rider Ryan Villopoto. The win signaled his full return to prominence after sitting on the sidelines for most of last season due to injury. Making sure a bad start in the Main Event didn’t threaten his chances at victory – as was the case at the Anaheim 1 season opener – James snatched the holeshot after blazing out of the gates with Kevin Windham and Oakley teammate Ryan Dungey following closely. But it was Villopoto’s charging that threatened Bubba’s smooth ride to a win.
