Marquez Approaches Rossi's Historic Feat With Sixth Straight Moto GP Win at Italian Grand Prix

He did it again. Making a last lap pass at the Italian Grand Prix, Marc Marquez won his sixth consecutive MotoGP race. It’s almost become predictable – in Hollywood big-screen magic fashion – but that doesn’t devalue the incredible streak the young Spaniard is on.

Week after week, race after race in 2014, Marquez continues to rewrite his own historic journey. With nearly every win since the campaign began in March, Marquez has matched or rewritten some new threshold of MotoGP history with this almost unprecedented string of runs. Almost. His current feat was previously accomplished by one man, Marquez’s Oakley teammate, Valentino Rossi. With the victory, Marquez became the first rider since ‘The Doctor,’ won seven straight in 2002, to take six or more successive races.

“I think this was the toughest race of this year. I was struggling in the beginning, Jorge [Lorenzo] was very strong mid-corner, carrying a lot of speed. With the used tires I felt better, like in the practice. Everything was perfect, we were able to overtake him on the straight due to a change we made to sixth gear. I’m really happy for the team too," Marquez said. “We now go to our home track [for the Catalonia Grand Prix). It will be a difficult race, but we’ll try to fight for victory again.”

Six-time world champion Valentino Rossi was cheered on by home support in the 300th Grand Prix of his career as he fought back from 10th on the starting grid. Rossi made the podium for the third consecutive race, placing third behind Marquez and Lorenzo. The Italian is now second (97 points) in the season standings, while Marquez remains comfortably in first (150).

The circuit next moves to Spain, where the race will take place in Marquez’s backyard. In his career, Rossi has made the podium 10 times at the Catalonia GP.
