Bio
After forging his name and reputation in the UK through supersport and superbike racing Chris Vermeulen – who races with Barry Sheene’s legendary number ‘7’ in honour of the former great who pushed his profile as an aspiring racer in Australia – enters his third year as a MotoGP competitor and second as a Suzuki representative.
The former superbike runner-up in 2005 has impressively gained five podiums and one victory in his two full campaigns to-date and excelled in the driving rain of France last year to walk the MotoGP podium for the first time (ensuring that Australia owned 12 of the last 19 events before the start of 2008).Vermeulen’s maiden victory, at Le Mans in France 2007, was the first win for Suzuki in six years; ending their driest spell since they entered the premier class in the 1970s.
He won the World Supersport championship (2003) and was 2nd in the WSB (2005) series before moving to Grand Prix racing. He used to work in his parent’s bakery, while dirt-track racing as a junior in Australia. His potential was encouraged and promoted by MotoGP Legend Barry Sheene and he left his home for the UK in 2000 where he spent two years racing Superstock and Supersport classes.
