Cherry on Top: Casey Stoner Finishes Magical Championship Season With Valencia Triumph
He was already crowned with the 2011 MotoGP Championship.
But O ripper Casey Stoner displayed once again why his competitive fire landed him yet another title, taking out the field in Valencia amidst tough, slick conditions for yet another victory.
But due to rain, the race was no walk in the park to close the season.
The wet track saw all riders break out slick tires…and from the very start, the weather took its toll.
Gunning for the first turn, Alvaro Bautista hit the asphalt, taking out Randy de Puniet – as well as Oakley riders Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi in the process.
It was a grind from there, with Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa battling it out for the No. 3 spot in the final season standings (behind Casey and Jorge Lorenzo. The two charged hard for the second spot on the podium throughout the event, but it was Oakley’s own American hot shot Ben Spies who would power out to the lead in Lap 23 after rain slowed the entire field.
With three laps remaining, Casey made his brilliant move, allowing Ben to take the lead with a one second gap. It was all but won by the Texan…until the audacious Aussie overtook him in the very last corner of the race – claiming his tenth win of the season and a cherry on top of his already magical Championship year.
Congratulations to Casey – and to the entire Oakley MotoGP team – for one badarse season!
