Casey Stoner’s points lead is officially solid.

Oakley’s Australian MotoGP star powered past defending Champ Jorge Lorenzo in the 26th Lap at the Mazda Raceway in Laguna Seca in late July – claiming his fifth season victory and a 20-point advantage at the top of the standings.

Despite some less than ideal testing, practices and qualifying, Sunday morning saw the team find their bike. An important factor in trumping Lorenzo, who logged in the fastest times all week and was clearly in form before crashing out on Saturday.

“This morning we found something and we thought we could run with these guys,” Casey said, rocking his Oakley MotoGP Scalpel eyewear.

The first 10 laps set the tone for the contest – with Casey smashing his way past Spaniards Dani Pedrosa and Lorenzo. Once the two largest threats were taken out, it was all smooth sailing as he cruised to a win by more than five seconds.

“I was patient. I was quiet, but I knew they weren’t going to run away,” he continued. “Once I caught up to Jorge, I watched to see if he made a mistake and kept the pressure on him, then chose my moment to make the move and was able to slowly open up a gap and bring the race home. It’s really fantastic to come from such a difficult weekend and get a great win and I’m very thankful to all my team.”

As always, pulling off the his 28th overall MotoGP triumph was more than a challenge. The Aussie definitely dug deep to put on a solid show for the 52,670 raucous American fans on hand for the final day.

The result was a victory that’s helping him to keep momentum rolling with eight races left in the season.

Congrats Casey!
