Stage 5: Oakley Cycling Star Mark Cavendish Claims Stage Victory at Tour de France, O Riders Dominate Top 10

Cycling : 98th Tour de France 2011 / Stage 5

Mark Cavendish just signaled his Tour de France arrival.

Oakley’s star cyclist tallied his first stage win and his 16th overall career victory after slaying Stage 5 today in commanding fashion. Mark emerged from a hotly contested bunch sprint at the tail end of the stage – from Carhaix to Cap Frehel.

“I’m just passionate about my sport, I love to win and the team gave it everything today to make sure I could get to the line first,” Mark said, rocking his Oakley performance eyewear. “There are a lot of difficult finishes this year and not so many bunch sprints, so I had to make sure I got this one, I had to be resilient.”

He definitely displayed his boldness.

Topping Philippe Gilbert and fellow Oakley rider Jose Joaquin Rojas of Spain in the final stretch, he made it clear that he came to make some serious noise in the French countryside.

“On top of that I’ve had some difficult starts to the big Tours, that was only different in 2009, but that’s just my character, not something to get obsessed with. We put every other race on the backfoot to be sure we’re in top condition for the Tour and that paid off today, that’s why we win.”

The speed demon has now claimed 26 Grand Tour stage victories, including two stages at the Giro in 2011 and 67 wins on the road since turning pro in 2007. His team, Oakley-sponsored HTC-Highroad, has nabbed 41 victories this season alone, rendering the squad the most successful World Tour Team this year.

And Oakley’s overall team is just as impressive right now at the Tour. Nine out of the Top 10 riders are rocking O’s. Just how we like it.

Congrats to Mark for the stage win!
