Few riders have a career resume as impressive as Fabian Cancellara’s. Besides being a four-time World Time Trial champion and the reigning Olympic time trial gold medalist, the thirty-year-old Cancellara has won the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix (twice), Milan-San Remo, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour de Suiss, Monte Paschi Eroica, and four stages of the Tour de France.
For his relentless pursuit against the clock, Cancellara has earned an appropriate nickname: “The Swiss Time Machine.”
Cancellara first started riding when he found an old bike in the family’s garage. He quickly gave up football and success followed: winning the junior World Time Trial Championship in 1998 and 1999 and earning second at 2000 U/23 World Time Trial Championship. Shortly after, at 19, Cancellara turned professional with Mapei-Quick Step, then one of the strongest teams in the world.
His break-through season happened in 2004. Riding for Fassa Bortolo, he finished fourth in the classic race Paris-Roubaix, and won the prologue at the Tour de France ahead of Lance Armstrong, earning the yellow jersey which he wore for two stages. He also won an individual time trial at the Tour de Luxembourg and bunch sprints at Setmana Catalana and the Tour of Qatar.
Cancellara and his wife Stefanie have one daughter, Guiliana. Along with cycling, he enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, Italian food and red wine.
