Spaniard Beatriz Recari Outduels Paula Creamer To Win Marathon Classic

26-year-old Spanish golfer Beatriz Recari is slowly making a name for herself on the LPGA Tour. Recari further cemented her name as one of the ladies to watch, as she wrapped up her second victory of 2013 at the Marathon Classic. Recari emerged with the win, following a one-on-one duel with one of the LPGA’s biggest stars, Paula Creamer, this weekend in Sylvania, Ohio.

The two ladies battled back and forth throughout the final day, until Recari took over the lead on the 14th hole at Highland Meadows Golf Club. The Spaniard’s five under 66 final round was enough to hold off Creamer for her third career LPGA title. She finished the tournament at 17 under 267, just a shot ahead of the American.

The two were still within a shot of each other coming into the final hole where both misjudged their tee shots. Recari overshot the green into the light rough, but was able to chip to within five feet of the hole, leaving her an easy putt for par. Creamer had a 20-foot putt left to tie, which she missed, allowing Recari to tap in for the tournament victory.

“I was definitely shaky on the last putt,” Recari said. “I knew I had to make it to win and avoid a playoff. A playoff is always nerve-racking.”

The runner-up, Creamer had plenty of good things to say about her opponent after the tournament.

“My goodness, there were so many great shots played today,” she said. “Do I wish I could go back and maybe change a couple of things here and there? Yes. But I played great. Beatriz just played one shot better.”

Many believe this epic duel in Ohio was a preview of the back-and-forth action likely to take place next month at the Colorado Golf Club during the 2013 Solheim Cup, where Recari will play on the European side, while Creamer will represent the United States.

“Back and forth, back and forth,” Recari said of their Sunday showdown. “It totally felt like the Solheim Cup.”

“There are great players out there,” she went on to say. “Like Se Ri (Pak), Annika (Sorenstam), like Inbee (Park). All I want to focus on is to be the best I can be. I cannot control what other people think about me. All I can do is put a good score out there, get those wins and the wins speak for themselves.”

Recari definitely did just that as she collected her third career LPGA victory and her second on the year.
