Skull Cup: Standout Regional Golfers Collide in Scottsdale, AZ for Coveted Oakley Trophies

RH-120201-9215

The PGA’s Phoenix Open may command the general public’s fanfare in early February.

But another contest, that rocks the scene just down the street at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, is where the real hard-core, non-tour golfers focus their attention and passion in the desert. Enter the Oakley Skull Cup 2012.

As the headline event that culminates the vibrant series of Oakley Pro Am golf tournaments – which hit the country’s major regions to find the most talented and explosive non-tour golfers around – Oakley’s core sport spirit collides with pure talent and a super fun atmosphere to crown a team of golfers with bragging rights and a collection of killer Skull Cups.

In an East vs. West format, the two teams compete head-to-head to determine the superior men behind-the-club. All decked out in their high-tech Oakley golf apparel, footwear and eyewear, of course.

And this year, the level of competition was as fierce as ever as the two groups faced off to the commentary of Oakley’s badass announcer, Chris “Geeter” McGee (of Fox Sports fame – Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers Broadcasts – as well as AVP/Pro Beach Volleyball for 14 Years, ESPN and Texas Network).

Oakley Pro Am Winners
Chris Smeal – Southern California Invitational Winner
Jerrel Grow – Nor. Cal. Shootout Winner
Kevin Shimomura – Hackfest (Hawaii) Winner
Tom Fischer – “The Gambler” Winner (Las Vegas)
Mark Kast – “Texas Throwdown” Winner
Doug Rohrbaugh – High Country Invitational (Colorado)
Gayle Leslie – “The Bear Trap” Winner (Florida)

Back-to-Back Champions
With crystal clear, yet cool and crisp conditions on the course during the final day of the Cup – the West Team came out of the gates on fire, leading three of the six matches through four holes on the day.

But the East came storming back – pushing up in three matches – while all-even in two, just a couple of hours later.

Fast forward, and with two matches to play, the East took the lead with 6 ½ to 3 ½ – effectively clinching victory before the final putt went down.

The result: The East Coast Team’s second consecutive Skull Cup triumph.

Celebration
Immediately following the big victory by the East, “Geeter” McGee gathered the players at the Clubhouse for the official celebration and champagne shower.

Geared with the Oakley Skull Cup uniform and Oakley protective goggles, the beasts from the East “popped bottles” and sprayed their ultra carbonated bottles of recreational beverages.

The After Party
It wouldn’t be a first class Oakley event without a raging after party. Period.

In typical O fashion, Oakley staff, athletes, local retail accounts and special guest athletes/personalities dropped into the massive banquet hall at the Talking Stick Resort for a feast, a series of awards, the trophy presentation, red carpet treatment and some rockin’ tunes from DJ Dax and Kelley James.

With the super wacky commentary from Geeter – combined with the immense passion emanating from the Oakley reps and golfers in attendance, the evening was a super appropriate way to wrap up what was a killer overall Oakley Golf spectacle…lined with indescribable enthusiasm from the entire O family.
