Oakley's Ben Crane And Michael Sim Take One, Two At Torrey Pines
Oakley’s Ben Crane & Michael Sim finished one, two at this past weekend’s PGA Tour event at the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, CA. Both players were wearing Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ’s – Crane was wearing his favorite Polished White Frame with a Positive Red Iridium lens. Sims was wearing a Custom Metallic Blue Frame with the Golf specific G/30 lenses.
It all came down to the last hole of the tournament when Crane knocked in a 30-inch par putt to finish off a 2-under 70 round and a one-shot victory over 25-year-old Australian Michael Sim, Brandt Snedeker and Marc Leishman.
It was Crane’s third career victory, and first in nearly five years, and this one earned him a trip to the Masters Tournament coming up in April.
Crane began the final round two shots out of the lead, which he erased in three holes. He stuffed a wedge to within 3 feet on the second hole, then rammed in a 45-foot birdie on the third. Crane also birdied from 20 feet on the fifth, and built his lead to three shots with another putt over 45 feet on the 11th. He never lost the lead after that and then it was a matter of hanging on.
Crane let Sim back into the hunt by missing a 6-foot birdie on the 12th, a 4-foot par on the 13th and another par putt inside 3 feet on the 17th, courtesy of the ball setting slightly in an indentation.
That set the stage for the 18th
Both players laid up on the par-5 18th, and both put too much spin on their wedges that the shots rolled off the green — Crane’s against the collar, Sim’s a yard off the front of the green, forcing him to chip. They both settled for pars giving the win to Crane.
Crane finished at 13-under 275, a victory that changes the outlook on his season including a trip back to Augusta National for the first time in three years, and his victory should put him inside the top 60 that gives him a good chance to qualify for the Match Play Championship.
“It’s really cool to know I’m going in the right direction,” Crane said.
