2009 Oakley AMG Classic

AMG Classic 2009

On August 17th, 122 golfers stormed The TPC Sugarloaf Country Club in Duluth, Georgia for the Inaugural Oakley AMG Classic.

The TPC Sugarloaf CC has been host to multiple PGA Tour events and Senior PGA Tour Events. With its pristine fairways, fast greens and challenging pin placements; TPC Sugarloaf CC was sure to be an unforgettable experience for all.

The Oakley AMG Classic started under sunny skies with an auction of 10 of the most beautiful bartenders in Atlanta as forecaddies. The proceeds from the auction went to Camp Twin Lakes, a unique nonprofit organization that provides life-changing camp experiences to thousands of children with serious illnesses and disabilities. The golfing began with a shotgun start at the conclusion of the auction. With a first rate group of sponsors everyone was in for a memorable afternoon.

The setting for the day consisted of a helicopter photographing overhead the golfers and sponsored activities. The Rolling O Lab began the “education” at the driving range and the fun began. An 80 ft Oakley icon painted on hole #1 let the golfers know they were in for a treat. The various holes of sponsors along the course included Grey Goose, Dewers, Bacardi, Muscle Milk, Pontiac, Twisted Taco, Corona, Arena Tavern and Red Bull. The second 80ft icon on hole 18 made sure that after all the mayhem, the golfers remembered who had treated them to such a unforgettable experience.

Seth Grissom, Bobby Knight, Ron Champion and Justin Locke, all representing Harrah’s Casino, received engraved crystal Claret Jugs for winning the Oakley AMG Classic. They filled them with beer, slammed them down and vowed to return next year to defend their title. As the finale, a mat was rolled out on the veranda of the clubhouse for a chipping contest. Tim McCabe, representing the Island View Casino and Windance CC from Mississippi, laid down a sweet 60 degree wedge over a wall of 80 ft. pine trees; down a 100 foot drop; over the bunker protecting the green and short of the greenside lake; within 8 feet of the pin on number 18, and walked away with an Oakley Warrant watch.

As the day came to an end, a monsoon engulfed the course and a double rainbow made a picturesque ending of a great day for all the participants and sponsors. A special thanks to the Szanti family and friends, Oakley, Team AMG, the staff at TPC Sugarloaf CC, Bacardi, Dewars, Grey Goose, O1 Connections, Corona, Red Bull, Twisted Taco, Lou Sobh, JC’s Muscle Milk, The Tavern and the O Lab Crew.
