Biggest Week of Oakley Golf Ever
Oakley golf had its single biggest showing ever at a Grand Slam tournament on the PGA Tour at the 109th US Open. With 30 players in the field wearing Oakley eyewear, footwear and apparel, the exposure generated over the five days of competition was truly unmatched. Many countries across the globe and three specific networks in the US with NBC, ESPN and The Golf Channel covered the tournament over the past five days of competition.
Once the field was cut down after two rounds of golf, five Oakley players remained in Ricky Barnes, Azuma Yano, David Duval, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson.
Standing at the top of the leaderboard and setting a new US Open 36 hole tournament score of 132 shots, producing a -8 at Bethpage Black was Ricky Barnes. In just his first full season on the PGA Tour since winning the US Amateur Championship in 2002, Ricky had stolen the spotlight as the “It” kid of the 2009 US Open. Scoring interviews on all the major networks, websites and magazines, Barnes in Oakley apparel, footwear and eyewear produced amazing coverage for the brand.
Ricky’s play was extremely steady this week, hitting all but five greens and 19 of 28 fairways. He’s only made one bogey, too, and that came on the 10th hole in the first round, during his first two rounds of play.
“Could I have predicted I would shoot 132? No,” Barnes said. "Did I know I had it in me? Yeah. I’m starting to play well. Working hard on my game on and off the golf course.”
In major contention going into the final rounds were Azuma Yano and David Duval who were within striking distance of the Ricky with solid under par scores. Azuma wearing Oakley Japan’s “skull collection” apparel and footwear line was hitting the ball consistent and seemed a likely contender. Meanwhile former world number one David Duval was shocking everyone with his stellar play off the tees and on the greens wearing custom Radars.
Sweden’s Henrik Stenson the 2009 Players Champion was looking sharp in his custom Radar sunglasses playing solid golf, wanting to make the most of his final rounds. As did England’s Ian Poulter in his custom Flak Jackets, who would go on to shoot the best final round score of the field with a three under.
In the end the final round would prove to be too much pressure for Ricky Barnes and he would finish tied for second with David Duval, Henrik Stenson finished alone in 9th place with a +1, Ian Poulter finished tied for 18th, and Azuma Yano finished tied for 23rd.
