Stenson Wins Tour Players Championship
Under the most extreme conditions, Oakley’s Henrik Stenson won the PGA Tours Players Championship on a treacherous TPC Sawgrass Stadium course that featured firm, ultra-fast conditions rarely seen this side of a major championship. Stenson was wearing his preferred custom White Chrome Radar frame w/Slate – Range lens kept bogeys off his card and clothes on his body, earning fame Sunday for a flawless round of golf and a surprising blowout victory. Stenson wondered if he would be known best for stripping to his underwear at Doral earlier this year to play out of a water hazard.
The 33-year-old Swede shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday and was the only player without a bogey in the final round. He missed only one fairway all day, the only times he came remotely close to making a bogey.
Trailing by five shots at the start of the day, Stenson took advantage of the swift collapse by Alex Cejka then joined the leaders by chipping in for birdie on the seventh. Then he took the outright lead with a two-putt from 55 feet on the fringe at the par-5 ninth. Then he stretched his lead with a pitching wedge into 2 1/2 feet for birdie on the 15th, then two-putted for another birdie on the 16th, taking some of the fear factor from standing on the 17th tee, staring at an island. Once Stenson’s ball found land on the 17th green, it was over.
“I could afford to go bogey-bogey and still win it,” Stenson said. “That’s always a handy situation to be in.”
It was the second-largest comeback at The Players Championship, and matched the largest rally on the Stadium Course.
Stenson, who won for the 10th time in his career worldwide, finished at 12-under 276 and earned $1.71 million and moved to No. 5 in the world ranking. With the victory comes a three-year exemption to the Masters and a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
Finishing alone in second was Ian Poulter – IP was wearing a custom White on White Flak Jacket XLJ w/custom Positive Red Lenses. Poulter shot a solid two under par 70 on Sunday for his best finish ever on the PGA Tour. Poulter is a win in waiting and is just now getting to the meat of his 2009 season. In his last four starts he’s tied for 20th, 13th, 5th and now alone in 2nd
Kevin Na – wearing a Pitch Polo in Sheet Metal and custom Black/Black Flak Jacket w/G30 Lenses finished tied for third.
Brian Davis – wearing a Black Flak Jacket XLJ w/custom Positive Red lenses finished tied for fifth with Ben Crane – wearing a White Flak Jacket w/Slate Lenses.
