A short but interesting press conference on December 15, 2006 kicked off the weekend activities of the inaugural edition of the Oakley Golf Puerto Rico Invitational. The press conference which was held at Center Court Sports in Guaynabo, one of the top Oakley retailers in Puerto Rico, featured the presence of Oakley Golf Athletes Ryan Moore and Ricky Barnes along with Oakley executives, media, and local golf pros.

On a picture perfect day in the Caribbean, the 2006 Oakley Golf Puerto Rico Invitational was held at the Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club in Ponce, Puerto Rico on December 16, 2006. Overlooking Ponce’s crystal Caribbean waters, rugged majestic mountains, and including Puerto Ricos first and only island green, Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club was the perfect site to host this inaugural event. A very detailed oriented set up including Oakley icons on the scorecards, Oakley key chains on the golf carts to Oakley tee signs and black Oakley hole flags proved to be a perfect start for the 2006 Oakley Golf Puerto Rico Invitational. The event featured a two men best ball competition that included Oakley Athletes, Celebrities, Oakley Retailers, Media, Event Sponsors, and a few lucky Oakley customers playing for great Oakley products and bragging rights as inaugural champions of the event. Additionally three Hole-in-One prizes were contested including an Oakley Time TankTM timepiece, a Ducati sport motorcycle and a Chrysler 300.

Shooting a round of 68, the winning two men team consisted of Raymond Isern and Carlos Junco, which led a star studded cast including international salsa singer Michael Stuart, MLB players Javier Vazquez, Livan Hernandez, Carlos Baerga, and FOX Prison Break star Amaury Nolasco, among others. The event featured the participation of PGA Tour player Ryan Moore and Nationwide Tour player Ricky Barnes which gave out tips, took pictures, and played with many of the participants. The sponsor crew did a magnificent job in making sure the ice cold Red Bull and Michelob Ultra cans, as well as the Macallan and Passoa cocktails were always available throughout the golf course.

A prize packed awards ceremony followed the great day of golf. The awards ceremony hosted by the Golf Club Restaurant at Costa Caribe Golf & Country Club included an awards presentation, an auction, a raffle and dinner. The Red Bull DJ spun music mixes as guests enjoyed a great buffet and a wide selection of chilled Michelob Ultra, Red Bull, The Macallan, Passoa, Don Q Rum, Skyy Vodka, and Cointreau cocktails. Additionally a very sweet auction featuring items from Oakley, PING, American Airlines, and celebrity memorabilia was held to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Puerto Rico Golf Association Junior Program. The raffle, which proved to be one of the events enjoyed by most with prizes ranging from American Airlines tickets, and Centennial cell phones, to PING golf gear and Oakley products, concluded the activities of the 2006 Oakley Golf Puerto Rico Invitational.

This was a very successful and strong weekend for Oakley in Puerto Rico taking golf tournaments to a new level. It could not have been done without the local Oakley event crew led by Michael Gutierrez, Ramon Corrada, and Julio Soto; all the event sponsors and partners; the Oakley team led by Al Janc, Joe McNulty, Casie Scorey, and Yogi Ybarra; and the staff from RCMG Sports Marketing & Events who all made the 2006 Oakley Golf Puerto Rico Invitational the premier golf event of the year.
