Catching Up With Last Year's Freestyle.ch Champion Oakley's Jacob Wester

Freestyle.ch not only represents the largest non-winter freeskiing event in the world, but also helps place freeskiing in the action sport community, along with snowboarding, FMX-ing and skateboarding. Other organizations claim to have big pre-season big air events, but Freestyle.ch really is the best and brightest. Top names compete for big prizes, in downtown Zurich, in front of thousands upon thousands of spectators. This event is one of the bookmakrs in the season, one of the events that athletes will make it to — or at least try to. Freeskiing as a whole, and especially in Europe, benefit immensely from Freestyle.CH’s reach, scope and prestige.

Oakley Swedish skier Jacob Wester won the 2008 North American Open Slopestyle, as well as the 2008 Freestyle.ch big air with a double cork 1260. We caught up with Jacob to hear his thoughts on this year’s Freestyle.ch.

You’ve won before…any thoughts going into the freestyle.ch this year?
I’m really looking forward to doing the comp again, although I must admit I do feel a fair bit of pressure. Last year’s final was sort of a spur of the moment thing where I hadn’t practiced my winning trick, instead I just said ‘here goes nothing’ and tried it for the first time in the finals. So I was lucky for sure. This year I feel like the bar has been raised, a lot of people will do the same trick, but in the end it’s going to be all about who will stomp it in the slushy landing. I will do my best with it.

For someone who hasn’t been or doesn’t know of freestyle.ch, what kind of contest is it? What’s the vibe? Is it one of your favorite events?
Oh, it for sure is one of my favorite comps all season because of the (usually) warm weather, the crowd that reaches the 30,000s, the music and just the whole mix of different action sports merged into one big festival. It is a great way to start off the season.

What did you do this summer?
I surfed, went to indonesia for two months and backpacked. I surfed probably 4 hours a day.

Where will you ski the most this year? Plans for the season?
I have no idea yet. It depends on the early comps, if I do alright I will film the rest of the season all over the place!

Coolest place skiing has taken you?
New Zealand. I can’t compare that place with any other country.

Where is some place you’ve always wanted to visit?
Hawaii

Which talent would you most like to have?
Social skills would be good.

What’s the biggest purchase you’ve ever made?
Probably my apartment that I bought together with my girlfriend, Sofia.

Greatest achievement?
In skiing, last year’s win at freestyle.ch, in surfing, getting shacked, brah.

Most prized possession?
My 2003 Rickenbacker 360. (electric guitar)

What music are you listening to right now?

Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. If you dont have the album, I strongly recommend it.

What are your favorite songs currently loaded onto your Thump?

Thrice; Their album Indentity Crisis and Illusion of Saftey.

To me, Oakley is
The shiznit.

When did you start your sport?
At age 5

If you could be someone famous, who would you be?
I’d rather be myself.
