Oakley athletes dominate, including a first and second in both freeski and snowboard, at Freestyle.ch Berlin held at Tempelhof Airport. At Freestyle.ch Berlin some of the world’s best Freestyle skiers, snowboarders, skateboarders and Motocross riders were able to show off their skills. Oakley’s Simon Dumont, Eero Ettala, Sandro Dias, Sammy Carlson, Jacob Wester, Seb Toutant and many more were among the athletes battling for individual and crossover champion titles. A 32-metre high ramp made out of steel and 200 tons of artificial snow was set up on the apron of the former runway.

A grand total of 47,000 visitors, 3 straight days of awesome weather, kickin’ live concerts and rousing freestyle action transformed Zurich’s Landiwiese this weekend into an unrivaled freestyle arena.

“Damn, the contest went well,” said Ettala. “I got 1st place, which is always sick, and kind of won it out of the blue. I ended up doing a backside 1080 late cork, first time ever trying that trick, never mind landing it!”

After a day in perfect conditions for the qualification runs with bright blue sky and in front of 20,000 spectators Snowboarder Iouri Podladtchikov was awarded crossover.champ 2009. The local hero rocked the Ultimate Crossover Session Saturday night at freestyle.ch 2009 at Landiwiese Zurich. During the crossover session at Europe’s biggest freestyle sports event he fought against Oakley’s skateboarder Sandro Dias, freeskier Elias Ambühl and FMX-pilot Oakley’s Dany Torres. Today the finalists of yesterday’s qualifications will fight in the Superfinals for the freestyle.champ 2009 title.

After two amazing days of qualifications the setup for Sunday guarantees snowboarding-, freeskiing-, FMXing- and skateboarding finals on a world class top level.
Saturday’s Freeskiers impressed the audience witnessing a hot neck-and-neck race. The US-guys Tom Wallisch and Oakley’s Sammy Carlson impressed the judges with a perfect double cork 1080.

In the Snowboard competition three riders got more than 170 (200 max) points. Christian Haller, Oakley’s Sebastian Toutant and Elias Elhardt are so far the men to watch. But never underestimate the local heroes Iouri Podladtchikov and Oakley’s Nicolas Müller or 2006 Champion Oakley’s Eero Ettala.

For the skateboarders it seems to be clear that Sandro Dias (Oakley) is the man, who seems to be unbeatable in his current form. With an incredible Backside 540 with extreme height, he scored 90 out of 100.

The FMX-Qualifications included tricks like the Cliffhanger and the Lazyboy Backflip. The two Superstars Oakley’s Dany Torres and Mat Rebeaud won their qualifying. The young guns Oakley’s Petr Pilat and Daisuke Suzuki stoked the crowd directly in front of the Rolling-O-Lab.

Catching Up With Last Year's Freestyle.ch Champion Oakley's Jacob Wester

Freestyle.ch not only represents the largest non-winter freeskiing event in the world, but also helps place freeskiing in the action sport community, along with snowboarding, FMX-ing and skateboarding. Other organizations claim to have big pre-season big air events, but Freestyle.ch really is the best and brightest. Top names compete for big prizes, in downtown Zurich, in front of thousands upon thousands of spectators. This event is one of the bookmakrs in the season, one of the events that athletes will make it to — or at least try to. Freeskiing as a whole, and especially in Europe, benefit immensely from Freestyle.CH’s reach, scope and prestige.

Oakley Swedish skier Jacob Wester won the 2008 North American Open Slopestyle, as well as the 2008 Freestyle.ch big air with a double cork 1260. We caught up with Jacob to hear his thoughts on this year’s Freestyle.ch.

Following Oakley freeskier Jacob Wester’s victory in Zurich last year, the American sunglasses and sporting goods manufacturer insisted on bringing in the big guns for this year’s Freestyle.ch. In and around the mobile, high-tech “Rolling O Lab”, Oakley will be presenting the limited edition freestyle.ch snow goggles, daily video highlights direct from the Landiwiese and, of course, top athletes such as Jacob Wester (ski) and Nicolas Müller (snow).
