World-beating X Games Gold and Silver medallist, Oakley’s Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams was named FMX Rider of the Year by an esteemed industry panel at the TransWorld Motocross Awards on the weekend.

The 24-year-old from Baxter in Victoria was present at the Las Vegas ceremony to collect his award and said he considered it a highlight of his career.

“It’s very special to win this award, it’s like a pat on the back for all the hard work and laying it on the line for the last few years,” said Williams.

“I was up against some really good riders – Nate is always a very consistent performer and Maddo’s (Robbie Maddison) accomplishments as well as contest riding made it pretty close.

“It’s good to win because all of the voting is internal and comes from within the industry, it shows that these people really do recognize what you’ve done.

“A big thanks has to go to all of my sponsors and the people that have helped me achieve my goals along the way – Monster Energy, DVS, Fox, Oakley, CTi, Pro Taper, Cycra, Pro Circuit, Dunlop, GPR Stabilisers, Ogio, Kicker, New Era, Brooksy at Humps, Bumps and Jumps, Anthony at Powerhouse Motorcycles, Fluid PR and WMG.

“And for their support since day one, I have to save the biggest thanks for my parents Tommy and Sandra,” he concluded.

Williams will be recognized on a more local scale when his hometown of Baxter adds his name to a star at the front of its cinemas.

He reached the pinnacle of the popular action sport in August when he became the first international rider to wrestle a Moto X gold medal from the grasp of US competitor.

He backed up his Moto X Freestyle win with a solid second place, the silver medal, in Moto X Best Trick.

The Australian rider looks set to make a return to competition early in the new year after spending time out recovering from injury.
