Oakley's Carolina Big Bass Classic Reels In Success
This past weekend the Oakley Big Bass Tour wrapped up the Carolina Big Bass Classic on Lake Norman just north of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Rolling O Lab and crew were deployed to the Bass Pro Shops at Concord Mills Mall to host the event registration all day on Friday. Anglers and attendees had a chance to tour the O Lab and discover Oakley’s HD Polarized optics.
The weekend’s tournament HQ and weigh-in stage was based at Midtown Sundries on Lake Norman. Warmer than normal temperatures and a slow moving storm front delivered tough fishing conditions. However anglers still brought 145 fish to the scales over the two-day competition, and all but two of those fish were returned safely back into the lake.
Wiley Nifong took the overnight lead early on Saturday with a 4.99 lb. bass, but his lead was erased on Sunday when the eventual tournament champion Hank Cherry weighed in a 5.14 lb. bass in the 8 to 9 a.m. hour.
While this tournament format was new to most of the anglers participating in the event, they quickly learned the strategies and tactics that brought a steady flow of bass to the scales. As predicted before the event, Lake Norman produced a large number of 2 to 4 lb bass that kept anglers "in the money.”
The Big Bass format starts a new contest at the top of every hour. The angler that weighs in the biggest bass for that hour won $400 cash, second biggest fish for that hour won $200 cash – third, fourth and fifth biggest bass for that hour collected $100 each. We repeat that process for seven hours on Saturday then another seven hours on Sunday. An exciting format.
Hank Cherry’s 5.14 lb. bass was the biggest bass over the two days which won the grand prize – a brand new 2010 Nitro Z8 bass boat equipped with a 200 HP Mercury motor and a Power Pole. Congratulations Hank – enjoy that new Z8!
The Oakley Big Bass Tour will look forward to returning to Lake Norman in 2010.
Our next tournament is the KVD Classic – set to hit Table Rock Lake in Missouri June 5th and 6th. Oakley’s Kevin VanDam will host the registration at Bass Pro Shops Springfield store all day Friday, June 4th.
