FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif., Aug. 2, 2010 – An Oakley infused Summer X Games came to a close Sunday after a five-day exhibition of incredible athleticism, courage and determination. Oakley athletes including the legendary Bob Burnquist, skater and reality TV star Ryan Sheckler and FMX rider Cam Sinclair found their way to the top the podium while wearing their favorite Oakley products.
Burnquist laid it all on the line last week, earning his first X Games 16 gold in the Skateboard Big Air Rail Jam Final on Saturday. He soared over Rob Lorfice, who finished second and Elliot Sloan, who rounded out the top three by throwing a switch 50/50 during his seventh run to set the bar with the highest score of the night.
“We started a couple years ago developing Mega gloves when Oakley put the Mega Jump in my back yard,” said Burnquist. “I knew I could rely on the technology of Oakley to come up with a glove that would withstand the abuse of Mega. Within those years we came up with the perfect mega ramp glove.”
Never a one-trick-wonder however, Burnquist worked his way up to gold with a silver medal finish in the Skate Big Air contest on Thursday night, followed by a bronze medal finish in Vert Best Trick on Friday. With three podium finishes, Burnquist is the most decorated Oakley athlete of X Games 16.
Fellow skater, Ryan Sheckler, also went for the Gold on Saturday during the Skate Street Final. Nyjah Huston gave him a run for his money, but Sheckler laced together a few seamless runs punctuated with a near perfect final to best Huston and take the win. This victory marked Sheckler’s third career X Games gold.
Rounding out Oakley’s golden trio was Australian native, Cam Sinclair who made his X Games debut wearing Oakley’s new
Mayhem goggles. His opening run in the Moto X Best Trick Final was one for the record books with a successful completion of a double backflip.
“Even though I have completed the double backflip eleven times, I was really worried because the set-up is different everywhere,” admitted Sinclair. “I am excited that I was able to pull it off." Cam’s success marked the third time a double backflip has been landed in X Games history. Additionally, Sinclair’s victory made him the second rookie ever to win Best Trick.
Also notable, was Shaun White’s much anticipated return to the skateboard competition scene after nearly two years out of major vert competition. He faced two-time and defending Skate Vert champion Pierre-Luc Gagnon (PLG). White took an early lead, but was ultimately outdone by the relentlessly technical PLG.
Oakley’s presence did not end with the athletes however. The Rolling O Lab, stationed in the Fan Fest Area downtown, was continually mobbed by Oakley fans looking for autographs and was a source of wonder and awe in its own right, as O Lab techs demonstrated the sheer strength and superiority of Oakley lens to the unsuspecting crowds. Additionally, Oakleys could be found on the likes of ESPN’s broadcast personalities who strolled downtown Los Angeles in Oakley Holbrooks.
