Final Stop, Orlando
The AST Dew Tour culminated this past weekend in Orlando, FL closing the book on year three of this insane action sports summer. Team Oakley had some great representation throughout the five stop tour with 21 podium finishes and two Dew Tour Cup titles that were handed out in Orlando at the Playstation Pro.
The Playstation Pro Skate Park finals could have been one of the most difficult contests to judge. All six skaters were on fire for the two five-minute section jam format, and the call between Oakley teammates Ryan Sheckler and Greg Lutzka could not have been closer. Sheckler missed more tricks, but hit a couple of huge ones, like 360 kickflip to flat; Lutzka seemed invincible, then took the hardest hit of the night coming down the big rail.
In the end, it was Lutzka on top and Sheckler in second. Ryan sealed up his third consecutive Dew Cup championship with his Toyota Challenge win last month in Salt Lake City, capping off an insane summer contest season.
During a practice run before his second run of the Vert Finals, Oakley’s Shaun White slipped coming down the transition and suffered a concussion. Before the injury, White had scored a 91.00, which would secure him a third place finish. Bob Burnquist had been throwing hammers from the mega drop-in ramp, but could not keep it all together in the final seconds of his third run.
The scene was charged up going into the BMX Dirt Finals; the Cup was on the line and Oakley’s Luke Parslow opened up with an x-up to turndown backflip and a tabletop frontflip. In Round 2 Parslow was the only guy to have two clean runs, knocking out a flip whip and a barspin to x-up flip.
Having flown his parents in from Australia for the contest, it was a fitting contest to win. “After my run I was taking my pads off and wondering how I did,” said Parslow. “I had no idea until someone told me I was in first. The nerves kicked in while I watched the rest of the runs. I didn’t think it was going to happen, but luck came my way. It’s a dream come true.”
Born in New Zealand, raised in Australia and now based in Corona, CA, Parslow began his career with Oakley Australia before moving to the states. Upon relocating, Parslow befriended Oakley’s Stephen Murray and Sports Marketing’s Mark Scurto and has been with the Oakley family ever since. Although Parslow takes a liking to the white Speechless, he won’t be joining the Uniquely campaign anytime soon.
After Parslow won the BMX Dirt finals, Oakley’s Stephen Murray was honored with a special that featured interviews with Murray, his family and his fellow riders about his accident and his recovery.
