BMX rider Stephen Murray suffered a tragic accident Friday, June 22nd in the BMX Dirt Finals the Panasonic Open in Baltimore, the first stop of the 2007 AST Dew Tour. Family members have established The Stephen Murray Family Fund where friends and fans can help pay his medical bills and support his wife and two young children.

Stephen was attempting a double backflip during his second run when he took the fall. Dew Tour medical staff rushed him to University Hospital where he underwent surgery on Saturday. Stephen is in critical, but stable condition and as of Monday, June 25, has some feeling in his hands and lower back and is able to shrug his shoulders. He is tentatively scheduled to have his second surgery on Tuesday. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as we await more information on his current condition.

Stephen has been with Oakley since 2002, representing our brand’s apparel and eyewear. An incredible ambassador for the sport of BMX, he came to the United States from New Castle, England more than ten years ago and has since won X Games gold in Dirt Jumping and consecutive wins at the Gravity Games. Murray even started an event in his backyard in Riverside, CA that has raised the bar in the world of BMX events. Stephen has the heart of a true champion and the ability to overcome even the most difficult of challenges.
