O Showdown: Beach Volleyball Stars Larissa & Juliana Top Walsh & May at FIVB World Championships in Rome
There was fierce firepower on both sides of the net.
The Beach Volleyball World Championships went down in Rome with the powerful Oakley Brazilian duo of Larissa Franca and Juliana Silva facing off against fellow Olympic Star Kerri Walsh and her partner Misty May-Treanor. And as expected, it was a battle to the end. But the South American pair edged their American counterparts, 21-17, 13-21, 16-14, to claim their first Gold in the ancient city.
The vibrant Brazilians lost twice in the World Championship Finals up to this year, including 2005 when they ran up against the wall that was May-Treanor and Walsh. They also secured a bronze medal in 2007. But this year, they were in form and a handful for anyone on the Planet to face.
“Concentration was very important and we had to stay focused,” Larissa said, rocking her Oakley Commit performance eyewear. “We stayed firm mentally and took it ball by ball, like we did the whole match. All the World was watching this match, USA v Brazil, and knowing that made it difficult. We stayed united the whole match especially during the difficult moments.”
The two bombers have been the prominent force in women’s beach volleyball as of late – taking five of the last few FIVB Swatch World Tour Championships. But the big one had eluded them…until now.
“I’m proud that we fought back and stayed strong when the game was difficult,” Juliana said, also sporting her Oakley Commit eyewear. “We came prepared to fight and we were strong. We stayed strong and became more and more confident.”
Despite coming up short, Kerri and Misty are clearly returning to top form after taking a break from Beach Volleyball to focus on building their families. The two had canned three World Championships and Olympic Gold Medals – are looking to reestablish clear dominance on the road to London 2012 as part of the U.S. Olympic Team, now equipped (eyewear) by Oakley.
