Current Baseball Legend Ichiro Suzuki Visits Oakley HQ

Ichiro Suzuki has been dominating the batters box he occupies in the lead-off position and outfield he roams since his first day in the MLB. Now nine plus years later he is still setting the standard for producing clutch base hits, throwing out base runners from the warning track and quietly leading his team as a true professional on and off the field.

This past season, on September 6, Ichiro collected his 2,000th MLB hit on the second pitch of the game, a double along the first base foul line. He is the second-fastest player to reach the milestone, behind Al Simmons. The following week Suzuki collected his 200th hit for the season, producing the ninth consecutive year for such a feat, setting an all-time major league record.

To celebrate Ichiro’s many accomplishments and most recent place in baseball history, he paid a visit to our global headquarters in Foothill Ranch, CA before the start of this year’s MLB season. Upon entry, Suzuki with his wife and agent were shown the red carpet treatment, picking out sunglasses in the O Store, getting the VIP tour of the building and finally ending with a meeting in the War Room.

In the War Room he was meet by the CEO Colin Baden, SVP of Global Marketing Scott Bowers, VP of Global Sports Marketing Pat McIlvain, Baseball Sports Marketing Manager Garry Gant and the head of watch design to develop a one of a kind watch.

Oakley wanted to recognize Ichiro’s two major feats in the 2009 season with a special gift, a one of kind, designed by Suzuki himself – Timebomb II watch. Ichiro chatted with the team in the War Room going over what he would like to see his watch look like when completed.

Upon leaving the building Suzuki was given the first pair of Carbon C-6 sunglasses that Lance Armstrong had worn in the final stage of the Tour de France, to try on and pose for photos.
