Ryan Rowland-Smith is an Australian Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher for the Houston Astros. Being the Aussie he is, he’s also an Australian Baseball League pitcher for the Sydney Blue Sox.

Ryan pitched for the Australian National Team in the 2004 Summer Olympic games, making four relief appearances, going 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA allowing only six hits and five walks while striking out 5. He helped the team to a silver medal. They made it to the championship game before falling to Cuba, 6-2.

He was rated the No. 8 prospect in the Mariners organization in 2008 by Baseball America before moving up to the Majors. Prior to 2010, Ryan had a 4.57 ERA in 362 career innings with the Mariners.

On December 9, 2010 he was signed to the Houston Astros – where he’s rockin’ and rollin’ today.

The son of Australian celebrity trainer Rob Rowland-Smith, known as “The Sandhill Warrior,” he is also an avid surfer and has a sister who’s a pro in the sport. When not on the field in the offseason, you can likely find Ryan spending a lot of his time in the off-season in his native Australia surfing.
