Vive Oakley! French Surf Team Ripper Romain Cloitre Seals 2011 ASP European Championship
It all started with Oakley’s epic boat trip.
French Surf Team Ripper Romain Cloitre had the “trip of his life” with O’s stacked team of elite riders – surfing unbelievable waves in the crystal clear waters of Indo. Just a few weeks later, he was crowned the victor of the 6-star Relentless Boardmasters in England.
Fast forward to the present, and the 23-year-old Frenchman is now the 2011 ASP Europe Champion – a perfect topping to what’s been an all-time season for Romain.
The 2008 European Junior Champion, he’s displayed this year just why he’s a true force to be reckoned with on the Tour.
“I’m really stoked to win this title and I won the Junior title and now the Open – so it’s amazing,” Romain said, rocking his Oakley eyewear, apparel and gear. “Newquay (England) for sure would have to be the highlight of the year. It was my first victory in a 6-Star event and it was here in Europe, so it was great. Before Newquay, I didn’t have a lot of confidence, but after that, I felt a lot better. I’m still working hard and this has also given me confidence for the next event and for 2012.”
Dropping into Billabong Azores Islands Pro – it was, by no means, a done deal.
Romain had to watch on as his closest rival Alain Riou (PYF) make his last charge to steal the title. Needing to make the quarterfinals, Riou fell short by only one heat when being taken out by Jay Quinn (NZL) in the Round of 12.
A well-liked and well-deserved winner of this year’s European title, Romain now has his focus on the remainder of the 2011 season and a full 2012 campaign to come – where he’ll most certainly be the center of attention on the continent.
“I was a little bit nervous at the end because Alain was still going and if he made the quarters he would have won. In the end it was not possible so I am very happy to win this title. It is good to finish like this in Europe and now I can focus on the next event in Brazil and the rest of the events in the year.”
An enormous congratulations from the entire Oakley Global Family to Romain for the amazing season and the Title!
