Sheep Hills, located in Southern California, has history. Maintained for decades by the riders and for the riders, it’s served as a training ground and testing ground and proving ground for legions of riders, from newbies to seasoned locals to the traveling pro. Mike “Hucker” Clark is a regular at Sheep Hills, riding there whenever his busy travel schedule doesn’t have him competing somewhere else in the world. When he’s in town, he’s regularly helping maintain the trails, working on his riding and always offering advice and positive vibes to anyone and everyone around him.
A skateboard and some ingenuity carried Luan Oliveira a long way. The setting has changed – from the streets of Porto Alegre, Brazil to the bright lights, big paydays and raucous crowds of Street League – but the passion for having his feet on a skateboard are very much the same. Despite the drastic lifestyle changes, Oliveira remains a giddy, good-natured kid at heart who wants to skate fast and stomp tricks. He still finds himself gazing at his surroundings with disbelief, be it on a trip with some skate legends or in the X Games gauntlet, but he’s earned every bit of good fortune that’s come his way. Oliveira is the newest member of the star-studded Oakley Skate Team, so we took a few minutes during his first visit to the Oakley Bunker to rap out with the guy.
For Nikki Van Dijk, qualification for the ASP Women’s World Tour wasn’t a matter of if, but when. In 2012, she was still in school and dabbling in the Qualifying Series. She was a wildcard into a WCT even hosted by her primary sponsor. At the end of the year, without fully committing herself, she found herself just three spots outside the bubble.
